Safety
Whether you buy your child a fancy dress costume for one day, a party, school event or to play dress-up with, you want to know your child is safe. All items intended for use by a child as a toy or in use in play has to undergo vigorous safety testing and must carry the CE mark.
EN71-1: Mechanical and physical properties
This part of the test addresses the parts that the toy is made from, ensuring its cleanliness, sharp edges, points, wires, choking
hazards etc. Its overall general safety for use in play, it also establishes the safety of use and any necessary warning signs for
the children under 36 months.
EN71-2: Flammability
This part of the test, determines the spread of flame rate of each part of the toy, this is especially important to Dressing-up
costumes as the child cannot easily drop the item and run away should it catch fire, they would have to take the costume off
first, so it is important to know how long it would take for a flame to spread.
The Current legislation is that the rate of spread of flame on the surface of the toy shall not exceed 30mm/sec or shall
self-extinguish, (This is marked on test reports as IBE, Ignites but self-extinguished).
Should the rate of spread of flame be between 10mm/s and 30mm/s, both toy and packaging shall be permanently marked with
“Warning! Keep away from fire”.
EN71-3: Specifications for migration of certain elements
This part of the test looks for potentially dangerous chemicals or banned substances and the levels of these elements that may
have been used in the production of the toy.
All of our products supplied with the intention for use by a child under the age of 14 will hold a safety testing certificate.
These are held at our offices at:
