Pride in London 2019
If you didn’t know already the London pride marches is soon to begin with Pride month having already begun and we’re all excited to see the streets of London glow with colours. On the 6th July, the LGBT+ community and its allies will march through the streets of London. This year is particularly special in fact, celebrating the 50th year since the Stonewall Uprising back on 26th June 1969 which is what kicked off the modern pride movement.
History
This march goes much deeper than just showing off their colours and having fun. It was a major issue not too long ago that people weren’t allowed to love someone of the same sex and finally it has been accepted. They’ve wrongly had to fight for this acceptance but with their dedication and determination they come together and didn’t bow down to those who told them they can’t and fought for what they believe in. This is such a powerful movement and it gives many the confidence not to be afraid.
Now we all know the rainbow symbolises LGBT+ but how many of you know why? Well 40 years ago in 1978 there was a man named Gilbert Baker who was an army veteran, artist and gay activist. He wanted to create a symbol that represented them as one and he made this simple design which becomes their most recognised symbol. It has changed many times over the years due to different reasons, but the original is 8 colours. At times its had to go down to 6 dues to reasons like the price of certain inks such as pinks and blues. But the original colours and their meanings are as follows:
