Australia Day in the UK!
So where really does Australia day come from and why do we celebrate it in the UK? This is the celebration of everything Australian, from the admiration of the beautiful landscapes that form the country to the appreciation of the Australian culture and way of life. Ask the most seasoned traveller if they have met a happier, more optimistic nationality of people. From the early morning as the sun rises over the Sydney Opera House until the twilight hours of the late arvo and on into the night, Australian life goes on without a mere grizzle.
Australia Day commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales in 1788, and raising of the Flag of Great Britain at that site by Governor Arthur Phillip. However, into the modern age, the celebration focuses less on these historical ties between the two nations and more so on the bright outlook on the world that Ozzie travellers have been known to impart upon those that they meet along the way.
As citizens of the world united, we come together on this day to celebrate in true Ozzie style! With gatherings occurring all over the world, the party atmosphere is sure to not disappoint. Events take place in london such as the Australia Day Walkabout starting at Temple underground station on the 26th of January. The air is sure to be filled with music, fun-filled events, plenty of fancy dress costumes and not to forget a beer or two!
Get hold of an Ozzie hat and flag, go out, meet some people dressed up as Kangaroos and be sure to
Have a yarn! G’day mate!
